Book Blogger Hop

Bookish: Book Blogger Hop #31

Book Blogger Hop.PNG

The Book Blogger Hop is a weekly meme with a prompt featuring a book related question. The hop begins on a Friday and ends on a Thursday and should hopefully give people the opportunity to learn something new about the blogger.

The Book Blogger Hop can be found on Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer and obviously my answers can be found here!

book cover

Absolutely. In fact, that’s usually what catches my eye in the first place – as it is intended to do.

Don’t get me wrong – I know the saying, ‘Never judge a book by its cover’ and it is an incredibly true statement. There are beautiful covers that are colour and foil and glitter and gold and flashy typography and stunning images (essentially everything that appeals to me) and yet they contain a story that is disappointing.

Then there are covers that are bland and beige and so ‘meh’ to the eye it hurts and honestly? They can be such a disservice for the feast of the story within.

Of course, content and cover can match but you’ll only know if you give it a go.

Ooh that rhymed!

I am a self confessed magpie and lover of a pretty cover design. In fact, I’m going to bring out my favourite GIF for this occasion to remind me of what really get’s me going on book covers.

Here are two previously written Top 5’s – one on my Top 5 Book Covers and the other on my Top 5 Book Spines. And yes, the above GIF does feature on one of those too.

It’s an incredibly short post this week my cupcakes because it’s 33 degrees today and I hate summer and can’t concentrate. Have I whinged about this before? You know I have. Will I whinge about it again? Abso-friggin’-lutely.

I don’t know how hotter places cope, I just don’t. It’s so hot I’ve spent the day pretty much staring at the cat who’s just been walking three steps and then flopping down.

It’s sweet, simple and straightforward this week everyone! I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether you’ve chosen / would choose a book based on its cover and if I had to guess I would say the answer would often be yes!

We do seem to like a pretty cover 😉

Next week’s question was whether I review all the books I’ve read but I feel like I’ve answered that one recently when I answered the question about how I get myself psyched to write reviews.

As I feel like I’ve answered that one I won’t be doing a Blog Hopper next week but will try and find something else instead!

  1. “Content and cover can match but you’ll only know if you give it a go.” BRILLIANT.

I hate hot weather too btw! Oh my goodness, do I abhor it. I love winter with its cozy sweaters and crisp air, and I’d roll out into the snow every day, but when summer comes along, I will stay inside for sure. With my air conditioning. Nothing can change my mind until the sun sets.

Pretty covers are my jam! Thankfully, I picked up my first YA book in a decade in 2016, and that was Six of Crows; gorgeous, sweeping cover imo. Same with Bear and the Nightingale; uugh, that cover can melt my heart. Sometimes, cover picks can go terribly wrong though, like Caraval; oh my goodness was I regretful that I spent $18 on something I’d end up throwing at the wall. I mourn my money to this day. 😂

    1. Ugh, I feel you on the weather. We’re due another heat wave (well, what counts for the UK) and everyone I know is loving it but I’m desperate for some rain. Also my plants and flowers are looking frazzled and I keep forgetting to water them!

Caraval was such a pretty cover and it reminded me massively of The Night Circus but I’m with you – what the heckin’ heck was going on???

      1. Rain, YES, rain! I love it when it rains super duper hard in summer, and right now I’m craving it because my AC happens to be malfunctioning when it’s like 90 degrees outside. (My plants are dying too, those poor things!)

Having read The Night Circus recently, I’ve been thinking about how hard Caraval was trying to be TNC…I didn’t notice it then (I just thought it was a randomly bad book), but I’m seeing the similarities there now!

        1. Caraval was sooo not for me it hurts but I do think it was trying to be YA The Night Circus and I think that’s partly way I was excited for it.

I am dying for rain but we’re approaching another mini heatwave in the next few days which means everyone get’s grumpy!

  2. Book covers definitely play a role in whether or not I pick up the book! It might be shallow, but pretty covers are just so much more eye-catching. Which is why it’s so frustrating when amazing books have bad covers!

Thanks so much for thinking to my post 😀 ❤

    1. I am a sucker for a pretty, shiny cover. I think I’m a publishers/ book graphic designer’s dream in all honestly. So many books have gorgeous covers and then the content is a let down which is a shame but then the reverse can happen as well!

      You’re welcome 🙂

  3. Great post! actually, I am one of those rare people who haven’t bought a book or added it to my tbr solely because of the cover. it’s because I am a little stingy when it comes to buying, and also because literally *all* covers attract me because I’m just that easy to please i guess. so if I decided to buy all the books with covers that I loved I would be so broke hahaha. I definitely agree that anything that shines is a good cover!

    1. Thank you very much! I have to say that is some skill! I can’t help myself, I’m like a kid in a sweet shop the second I see a pretty cover.

I’m intrigued as to how you select books? Do you do mainly online buying or bookstores? If it was online I could see how you could ignore the appeal of the covers but in a bookstore I think that’s all I tend to see! Basically I need you to tell me your secrets or share your willpower because I have zilch self control!

  4. Doesn’t everyone read books based on the covers? That’s your first impression of a book, often, the thing that makes you pick it off the shelf! (Or maybe click on it now?) I always read books based on the cover!

Thanks for sharing my link–and giving me some good reading material!

    1. Well that was my thinking too! It’s the first thing you see and it’s why publishers employ graphic designers who specialise in book covers. I’m also taken by anything shiny (as mentioned) so if they splurge for foil I’m in!

You’re welcome! There’s lots of good stuff out there!
