Bookish: Top 5 Tuesday – 5 Star Predictions

Top 5 Tuesday.jpgGuys….

Listen….

Guys….

I am the pickiest reader I know. Not just a little picky but a lot picky.

I started recording the books I read in 2018 and when I look at that reading year I can see that out of 49 books read I only gave two books a 5 star rating. That’s a 5 star rating hit rate of 4%. That’s low.

My 4 star ratings are significantly higher and reached a 24.5% hit rate so at least I do rate books highly, just not 5 star high.

So far for 2019 I have read 17 books. If I look at the ratings given 5% are 5 star and 29.5% are 4 star.

What does this mean? Well it means that I am more likely to give a book I enjoyed 4 stars over 5. It goes back to that ‘being picky’ thing.

The reason why I would give a book 5 stars over 4 is usually down to how it made me feel and so there’s absolutely no science or formula involved. I’m also very surprised at two of the books I rated 5 stars as they aren’t what I would call my ‘type.’

All bets are off.

This probably means that the task Shanah at Bionic Book Worm has set us for the week to choose our 5 star predictions is probably going to be waaaaay out for.

I don’t necessarily believe that the below will be rated 5 stars from me but I’m predicting (hopefully) that they’ll get close.

Without further adieu….

One

the princess bride

Am I using The Princess Bride in one of my Top 5 lists yet again?

You bet I am.

Let’s not kid ourselves as to why this is on here. I adored the movie so so so so so so much and while I understand that the book and the movie are vastly different I have high hopes that I will adore the book just as much.

Please book gods… make it so.

Two

Spinning Silver

One of my rare 5 star ratings for 2018 went to Uprooted by Naomi Novik. It ticked all the boxes of everything I love from a story and I constantly bang on about it on my blog.

I am beyond excited to read Spinning Silver and, in what is probably a terrible precedent to set myself, I am genuinely hopeful that Spinning Silver will elicit the same feelings.

three

The Familiars

In Fleetwood Mac’s epic song ‘Everywhere’ they sing, “Something’s happening/ happening to me” and I can tell you my friends that the thing that’s happening to me is this:-

I have fallen in love with historical fiction.

I don’t know when, where, how or why. I only know that it’s happened and it’s happened unexpectedly. The Familiars is on my TBR and because I am riding the historical fiction love train I anticipate that I will rate this highly.

Four

Burial Rites

Not only is Burial Rites a historical fiction (see above for musing on my new love affair with this genre) it also features one of my other favourite things to read about. Prepare thyself…

Murderesses

In fact, this follows the trend of books that I seem to be reading involving subjugated women killing their masters/ mistresses.

Is there something wrong with me??

Don’t answer that.

Five

evelyn hugo

I must ‘fess up, the reason why The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is on this list is because everyone and their cousin has raved about this one and have chucked 5 star ratings at it like confetti.

Now there could be a backfiring of my expectations spectacularly as sometimes hype doesn’t pay off. Let’s hoping that it does!

Breaker

Have you read any of the above? Are you raising a caustic eyebrow because you’ve read this list and you know, without a shadow of a doubt, that some books will be DNF’s?? Or are you raising a glass of champers in salute because you know that I’ll be joining the ranks of the 5 star rating club?

Let me know your thoughts and your 5 star predictions!

See you next week!

  1. Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a 5-star prediction for me as well. I’ve just heard that it’s very well fleshed out (and it made people cry), and that’s all I need for a good read.

By the way, I finally started Uprooted! I had a few qualms about at the beginning, but whenever I can’t bring myself to continue nit-picking at a book (because there are so many positives), that’s when I know there’s promise there. I’m looking forward to finishing it! 😁

    1. I am looking forward to it and if I go by other’s opinions than it’s a 5 star prediction (although I am worried that I’ll buck that trend….)

Asdfhdskhgkdfhkghdflgh!!! Oooh Uprooted! How are you getting on with it now? Feel free to tell me your qualms and nit picking because I know books are never perfect and I love to hear other opinions on books I love!

  2. I’m the least picky reader I know! I rate books based on how they make me feel too, but I have a lot of feelings so I give a lot of books 5 stars. I’ve only rated one book 5 stars this month though (well, one book and a re-read) and I’m very confused by this development. It’s almost as if I’ve started thinking critically about books, instead of just crying and hugging them 😂
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is the only book that’s made me feel like a picky reader. Everyone loves it so much and I felt so indifferent towards it the whole time I was reading it. It’s probably because I’m so uninterested in Hollywood and celebrities in fiction. I hope you’ll enjoy it more than I did! And thanks for the reminder that I really need to watch The Princess Bride. It was just added to Norwegian Netflix, so I have no excuses!

    1. I think however people approach books (critically or crying and hugging) is a good approach as long as it makes them happy! I’m very fluffy like that 😛

Yours is the only opinion that I’ve seen on Evelyn Hugo that hasn’t been gushing with praise but actually its refreshing. My worry is that I will read it and then hate it and have to slink off into a hole with trolls when people find out.

YES! You have no excuse to not watch The Princess Bride – it is amazing! You must watch it!

    1. Oh no, don’t be jealous of my pickiness! It’s a curse I tells ya!

I feel like I tend to rate low or average -2/3 and I wish I was less fussy.

I’m really into historical fiction at the moment, I never used to be but I think it’s crept up on me and I absolutely love it now to ridiculous levels. I’m hoping The Familiars and Burial Rites does the ticket for us both!
