Bookish: 30 Interesting Questions

Book Tag

Today would usually be a Top 5 Tuesday but we’re doing something a little bit different as there is no Top 5 Tuesday subject scheduled.

Me saying ‘doing something a little bit different’ means that I’m taking advantage of the mini-break of a scheduled feature to try and catch up on some of the awesome tags that I’ve been… well… tagged in!

Bibi @ Bibi’s Book Blog answered 30 questions and answered them well! The baton has been passed to me so we shall see how I fare.

Here we go…

tag_-30-interesting-questions

1. What are your nicknames? What do you prefer to be called?

‘Gerry’ is technically a nickname as it’s not my real name. I also go by Ger, Gerbear, Gerald, Geraldo and um…. Pidge. Spot the odd one out.

2. How often do you doodle? What do your doodles look like?

I doodle quite a fair bit, usually during meetings at work. This is what my doodles look like…

houseNormally it’s some kind of food substance!

3. What do you do if you can’t sleep at night? Do you count sleep? Toss and turn? Try to get up and do something productive?

I read something a while ago that if you can’t sleep the worse thing you can do is get and do something because then you’ll fully wake yourself up. If you lie there and let your body relax (even if you can’t sleep) your body still gets the benefit of being rested.

That’s what I tell myself constantly when I can’t get to sleep which is often because I am the most anxious person I know.

4. Do people consider you to be talkative or quiet?

I will not shut up if a) I’m around people that I’m really comfortable with or b) if I’m really nervous and don’t know people that well.

Such a contradictory thing isn’t it?

5. What makes you cry?

Literally everything. No seriously… everything. Meaningful stuff that’s sad makes me sob. Happy stuff that makes me feel happy makes me sob. When I’m angry and am filled with fiery rage I sob.

I also cry at books, TV shows and movies. I swear that my eyes are always leaking about something.

6. What is your biggest pet peeve?

Rudeness. I know that’s such a blanket statement which can encompass many things and is probably very subjective but if I perceive someone as being rude then I get very agitated.

The last example of something that I thought was rude was when I walked down the corridor at work and smiled at someone and he looked straight down at the floor rather than smile back. I’m in HR so I get that from some people for some reason.

I’m used to it but it’s still rude and it still makes that person a dick.

7. How many times a day do you look at yourself in the mirror?

17 and a half times.

I don’t know! I guess putting my make up on in the morning would be difficult without one and there’s a mirror opposite every sink so when I wash my hands I see myself. I check how smeared my mascara has gotten but that’s pretty much the extent of my face gazing.

I know what I look like by now.

8. What is the strangest thing you believed as a child?

That when the bath water got murky it meant sharks were able to swim up the plughole.

9. What is the guilty pleasure you enjoy too much to give up?

Reading fan fiction. Also… writing fan fiction. Yes I currently do it. Yes I am actively posting for two fandom’s online. Yes I have stuff up there on A03 and Tumblr right now.

No I shall never disclose my pseudonym or fandom’s 😛

10. Who performs the most random acts of kindness out of everyone you know?

I’m going to cop out of this one and say that I don’t know. I’m saying that because I am surrounded with awesome people who do awesome things for others all the time so I honestly couldn’t choose.

11. How often do you read the newspaper? Which sections?

Every day on my commute I pick up the commuter paper ‘The Metro’ and I love it. My favourite is reading the section which is where people have contacted the paper. That section has comments from readers on previous news stories but there’s also the Good Deed Feed and Rush Hour Crush which are just greatly heartening.

12. Which animal scares you the most?

Read my answer to question 8. Now do we think that my shark phobia came about because of my strange childhood belief or do we think that my strange childhood belief came about because of my shark phobia?

NB: I am not scared of chickens. Just in case anyone sees the picture!

13. Are you more likely to avoid conflict or engage with it?

I don’t deliberately seek out conflict because I want nothing more than an easy life and sometimes people have assumed that my ‘peaceful’ stance means I won’t engage with conflict.

They. Are. Wrong.

I am actually incredibly argumentative and will not back down on a matter if I believe I am acting for just reasons. I choose my battles but I aim to win the battles I’ve chosen.

14. What is the most recent compliment you’ve received?

“The craftsmanship of the prose is assured, polished, professional, and readable. The writing is very good.”

I entered NYC Short Story Challenge in January and we had feedback sent to us yesterday. This was one of the comments.

I placed third in my heat and have advanced to the next round so that’s pretty cool.

15. What question are you tired of hearing?

“But I don’t use my company van for personal use so why do you still have to report it on my P11D?”

Ugh. Sorry. The one aspect of my job I really don’t like is P11Ds.

Anything that involves tax and HMRC is not fun. Trying to navigate the murky waters of HMRC legislation and explain things to employees is less fun. When the employees disagree with everything you tell them even though you’ve contacted HMRC directly about the issue is even less fun – if that can even happen.

16. What is the strangest thing you’ve eaten?

Garlic snails or deep fried maggots. I’m not too sure which!

17. Do you have a whole lot of acquaintances or just a few very close friends?

A mix of both. I have few people I would call ‘acquaintances’ but a lot of people I would call friends and then another few people I would call my best friends.

18. Do you have a catchphrase?

No, but I’ve gotten really into saying ‘blimey!’ at the moment. I also say ‘alright, gov’nor’ in a deliberately bad cockney accent which is now too regular to be ironic.

19. What’s your all time favourite town or city? Why?

New York City has a special place in my heart because I like free it makes me feel. There’s so much to do and see and I feel like you be in many worlds in one city.

I fell a little bit in love with Wanaka in New Zealand which is the direct opposite of NYC. It just felt quirky and relaxed and I love mountains and lakes.

20. If you had to change your first name, what would you change it to?

I’d never change it. I used to hate it so much because it’s weird and old and no one has the name anymore.

Now I love it because it’s weird and old and no one has the name anymore.

Funny how things change from when you’re fifteen.

21. When was the last time you lied?

Probably when I said, ‘I’m fine.’ Fine is the British way of saying that you’re not ok and the world is falling apart. It’s also the British way of saying that you’re not ok and you want the other person to know that you’re not ok but you don’t want them to acknowledge or do anything about it.

22. What’s something that amazes you?

I have a few friends with children who have been through some difficulties. We’re stalking strokes, dwarfism, cleft palates, autism, hernias and so on. These are children. They are brilliant because they’re happy and get on with it.

23. Would you rather be the first person to explore a planet or be the inventor of a drug that cures a deadly disease?

Inventor, 100%.

24. What is your favourite amateur activity?

Writing. I’d love to be good enough to be a professional but I’m trying.

25. What was your first thought when you got up this morning?

‘Where’s the cat?’

26. What is your favourite song (at least at the moment)?

I go through stages of listening to the same song on repeat for weeks on end.

This one currently has the honour…

It makes me want to dance under the full moon around a bonfire. I seriously want to start a coven with this woman!

27. List someone you know and describe them in five words?

Let’s go with my husband! I’m going to give him a five word sentence: the best in the world.

28. You can select one person from history and have them truthfully answer one question. Who would you select and what would the question be?

It’s not really answering the question (at all) but I want to know who Jack the Ripper was. It’s terrifying that someone committed such vile acts and was never caught. So I guess I would select them from history just so I would know who it was. I guess I would ask, why did they do it?

29. Which celebrity or artist do you resemble the most?

My brother watched Fantastic Beasts and said he was thrown off the entire movie because me and Tina were the same person.

30. What do you want me to know?

My cat is so cute.

But also Bibi shared a comic that she loved so I’m going to do the same.

I love Hades and Persephone and this is an awesome online comic strip. Th artist has more on Tumblr.

I’m not going to tag anyone specifically for this one (I need to get in the swing of tagging!) but if anyone thinks this is something they want to do then go for it! Tag back to me so I can read your answers!

  1. “I will not shut up if a) I’m around people that I’m really comfortable with or b) if I’m really nervous and don’t know people that well.” – Yes, that’s contradictory! But I do the same thing. Nervous habit of just talking and talking when I’m around peeps I don’t know is honestly the worst thing ever since it leads to me being embarrassed in the end.

Oh and preach: being a peace-keeper doesn’t mean you can’t be argumentative. For me, I think it chocks up to bottling up injustices I see all the time around me, so whenever someone dares be rude/stupid in front of me or starts an argument, I’m like, “let’s go, I’m ready to beat you down.” People call me an angel, but they also say I’m the most stubborn/argumentative person alive. 😂

By the way, you DO look like Tina from Fantastic Beasts! How uncanny… Also, I admire you for having consumed deep fried maggots; like, what madness caused you to do so? Also, “17 and a half times” – lol I like how you include the “half” there. XD

    1. Honestly the ‘over talking’ leads to ‘over sharing’ and then my social anxiety kicks in and I try and avoid people for a million years after because I am the worst at replying stuff in my head over and over again until I turn it into a monster. People probably just think ‘boy she’s chatty’ and here I am having an existential crisis!! Doh!

I had someone tell me the way I look is often a contradiction to how some people expect me to me. I’m short, have freckles, wear pink lipsticks and everything I own is a floral dress of some kind and boy do I friggin’ love pastels. I have a fuzzy cat and cry at everything and then somehow I will tear someone a new bumhole if I need to. I just don’t need to be antagonistic, I go on the defence which is different. I think. Join me in the ‘stubborn’ club!

Haha! I honestly didn’t see it when my brother kept saying it but now I sort of do. It was probably even more uncanny when I had short bobbed hair pretty much like Tina does!

I will eat/ try anything. My friend had some and she offered so I thought ‘what the heck!’

    1. There’s definitely a few of us emotional types about which is good because we can all cry in one big huddle!

I’m the same – even though I know *not* to get up there have been times when I just can’t lie there listening to my husband and cat sleeping peacefully so I end up getting up. It backfires 😛

  2. I’m a constant crier too!! (if you haven’t already figured it out :P) There’s a quote from the movie Moonlight that I REALLY relate to–“I cry so much sometimes I turn into drops.”

    9. Oh no. Now I REALLY want to know. Would bribing you with baked goods help??

    16. My mom always got me fried maggots from street vendors in Korea when I was tiny and I loved them, except I didn’t *know* they were fried maggots at the time. And I didn’t find out until like…6 years later. I didn’t take it well. 😂

And you might have already mentioned and I forgot, but what’s your short story about? It’s so cool that you’re advancing to the next round!

    1. Join me in my club for criers! Honestly, anything gets me going. I think my eyes have even misted at episodes of Brooklyn 99. I have problems.

      9. I shall never reveal that secret 😛 Mainly because I write such awful fan fiction that I would be ashamed! Especially my attempts at *ahem* erotica. I tried it once and just can’t do it.

      16. The fried maggots I tried were when someone brought them back from Korea! They didn’t taste of much other than what they were fried in but just knowing they were maggots were slightly off-putting! I’ll give anything a go though!

My short story was based on three prompts we were given – comedy (genre), astronomer (character) and incompetence (theme). It was an ok attempt but someone must have enjoyed it. The prompts for the second round were spy (genre), computer programmer (character) and disorganised (theme). I struggled massively because I don’t read spy at all. I don’t think I’ll advance to the third round but I’m pleased with myself for attempting the challenge!

      1. I mean, B99 turned out to be more heartfelt and sweet than I’d expected, so I think having misty eyes is normal! Have you ever watched This is Us? I swear, I cry at least 5 times every episode.

        9. Oh noooo, now you’re just making me more interested. I wrote awful self-insert harry potter fanfics with erotica when I was a teen, and they were truly truly awful, so I’m sure yours can’t beat that. 😛

And ooh, those are interesting prompts! I…wouldn’t have known what to do with a story about an incompetent yet comedic astronomer. Incompetent I can do. But comedy??? And astronomy??? Big nope. Fingers crossed that you’ll get into the third round!

        1. Brooklyn 99 has such a heart to it and I just get the vibe that all the actors are living their best lives on that show and that makes me melt a bit too. I’ve not watched This is Us but I’ve heard about it and I don’t think my heart could take it. I watched The Haunting of Hill House last year and someone described it as a supernatural This is Us and honestly, for such a creepy show it was surprisingly sad and tear inducing.

Hahaha! When I was a teen it was Roswell fan fiction (and my adult heart still loves that show) and I read sooo much Buffy fanfic although I didn’t write any. I feel like as an adult I shouldn’t be writing fanfiction any more but it’s just so much fun and who writes the rules anyway?

The astronomer was the only one who wasn’t incompetent! She was trying to convince an incredibly incompetent town government that a comet was about to squish them all and was despairing because no one believed her on account of her being a lady and all.

It was obviously enough to get me through to the second round! My fingers and toes are crossed but I don’t think I met the prompts correctly, we’ll see!

  3. My fanfic name is Antane (Aunt Anne, as I am a proud aunt of 11 and a great-aunt of 2) 🙂 so that would be my nickname. If I can’t wake up in the middle of the night and can’t back to sleep, I waste time tossing and turning until I get up and read for about 20 minutes or so and then I can usually get back to sleep without a problem. Can’t stand rudeness, stupidity, waste, barking dogs. I can be very talkative or I can be quiet. I hate parties. Don’t read the newspaper or watch the news. This Anglophile loves the UK.

    1. I must admit I think it’s a skill if you can read for 20 minutes and then go back to sleep because the second I read something I’m wide awake and its so hard to get back asleep!

Glad to hear you love the UK! It has its flaws but overall I’m fond. Have you visited? What’s your favourite places?

  4. This is such an interesting tag, I loved reading your answers! 😊

    4. So basically you never shut up? I relate! 😂
    5. I always cry too. If I’m having feelings, I’m crying. Typical Pisces!
    14. Congratulations, Gerry! That’s really cool!
    26. I can’t believe you want to start a coven with someone else, I thought we had something special…
    29. You and Tina are twins! So much beauty in one post, wow. 💕
    30. I love this! Thank you for sharing!

    1. Tehehe! Thank you Aurora!

Now, to answer your questions 😛

      4. Absolutely! I never stop talking. It’s such a problem especially when I realise that the people I’m talking to have a) wandered off b) stopped listening or c) fallen asleep

      5. My eyes are just leaky. It’s what I tell everyone. It’s easier in spring because I can pretend its hayfever.

      14. Thank you! I was very surprised but pleased!

      26. Florence can be our spirit animal, she will bring epic witchy vibes to the coven PLUS we will get great music!

      29. Hahaha! This seems to be the consensus! I have to tell my brother his eyes aren’t wonky after all 😛

      30. I adore Hades/ Persephone so I will find every form of it on the internet if I can.

    1. Thank you Bibi! And that you for tagging me in it, it was fun to do! Children are just incredible, it’s adults that struggle to cope with all these life altering things but kids just get on with it. Honestly some of the bravest people I know are 5. Oh Punderworld is awesome but I’m a huge Hades/ Persephone fan!

  5. Oh my gosh … I relate to the crying part ha-ha! Funny enough though, I can’t cry in front of people … I used to be SUCH a cry baby, but no matter how sad I am, I basically just can’t unless I’m hidden ha-ha!

    Oh man … I can’t STAND rudeness … it’s just so unnecessary!

I’ve only been to NYC once but I remember loving it, which is strange since cities usually give me anxiety (like Toronto …). But it was so surreal. I REALLY want to visit New Zealand one day …

OH MY GOSH! YOU DO LOOK LIKE TINA!!! That’s a compliment BTW, because she’s super pretty and cute.

I loved this entire post — great job!

    Liked by 2 people

    1. I am a massive cry baby! It’s ridiculous because a lot of the time I’m not even sad! It’s hard to convince people that you’re outraged when you’re angry crying.

Some cities are anxiety inducing in my opinion, I’m not a fan of London even though it is my nearest city and I go there regularly. Oddly, despite the size of NYC I quite liked it. I think I just ‘vibed’ with it.

Hahaha! I’ll let my brother know his opinion is justified!!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. LMAO! Oh my gosh, I totally understand that ha-ha! I get really emotional about injustices and anything about animals. I also just cry when watching those videos of people returning from the military and kids/wives/husbands/parents/animals get excited … okay … or just any video on something super beautiful or super sad … oh well … I’d rather be emotional and empathetic …

I want to visit London eventually, but I don’t think I could live there. Too busy from what I’ve heard. NYC is super cool. That’s maybe ONE of the FEW busy places I could actually live … maybe …

        LMAO!! Nice 😉
